Some 18 representatives the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs, WHO local office,  Georgia TB Coalition, and primary care clinics attended a thematic working meeting as part of TB-REP activities implemented by Georgia Family Medicine Association in Tbilisi on May 24th 2016.

The meeting participants were welcomed by Dr. Irina Karosanidze and Dr. Tamar Gabunia
who presented an overall picture of the TB-REP project and highlighted the role of patient-centered outpatient care in end-TB strategy.

The presentation of a situation analysis findings on the TB care access barriers from point of view of  geographic accessibility, availability, equality, affordability and acceptability. Dr. Gabunia underlined the role of CSOs Georgia's experience and future prospects to develop sustainable models and the fact that the new End TB Strategy aims at strengthening patient-centered approaches in TB prevention and care. This can best be achieved through strengthening outpatient TB treatment. It is important to explore the local context and consider the ways to strengthen PHC sector, thus creating a supportive environment for TB prevention and care by primary care providers.

Dr. Irina Karosanidze stressed the importance of political commitment, especially in terms of
transition from donor funding and suggested that PHC services will be willing to take active
role if supportive environment is created.

The discussion was followed by the presentation of draft recommendations to government of
Georgia, TB service providers, donor agencies, civil society organizations, professional
associations and current and former TB patients. The recommendations were accepted by
the group members.
