Advocacy efforts of Azerbaijan’s CSOs, discussed with prof. Kazatchkine

Special advisor to UNAIDS for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, professor Michael Kazatchkine, has advocated TB, HIV/AIDS and viral Hepatitis response of Azerbaijan at high level, during his official visit in Baku (30.09-03.10.2019).

To increase Government commitments to reach UN 2030 Agenda, he met with the deputies of the Prime Minister responsible for Sustainable Development, minister of Health, deputy minister of Social Affairs, head of State Agency on Mandatory Health Insurance, head of Main Medical Department of the Ministry of Justice and parliamentarians from the Health Committee.

Attending the National NGO Forum, he discussed with TB Azerbaijan NGO Coalition and the NGOs operating HIV/AIDS fight projects with support of the Global Fund. Prof. Kazatchkine brought into discussion the Civil Society Organisations’ (CSOs) efforts and advocacy activities for sustainable TB, HIV response in the context of the transition from the Global Fund to domestic resources. It was also discussed Azerbaijan response for the three diseases, CSOs concerns about future funding of TB, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis treatment for both civil and penitentiary sectors.

The opportunities ensure sustainability of activities funded by the Global Fund, coverage of services in the Mandatory Health Insurance system of Azerbaijan. “Saglamliga Khidmat” Public Union, part of the TB Azerbaijan NGO Coalition and also the TB-REP 2.0 grantee in Azerbaijan, stressed on CSO role in TB patient support and importance of sustainability of services.

TB Azerbaijan NGO Coalition emphasised on high level advocacy successes as result of fruitful collaboration with Parliamentarians over the last two years. That led to the participation of the Coalition in two Public Hearings and contribution to legislative changes. Prof. Kazatchkine welcomed CSOs’ efforts and significant contribution to the national response and achievement of SDGs. He also took note of the CSOs concerns and gave valuable recommendations on further advocacy.
